HORSEBACK TREKKING IN
"THE KINGS' RIDE"
(Wilfried Colonna & Atallah Sabbah Sweilhin in 1998)

The "Kings' Ride" proceeds parallel to part of the famous "Kings' Highway", which crosses the plateau of Transjordan on its most mountainous fringes.
Within the country of the legendary kingdoms of Moab and Edom, where various fading traces have been left by the Hebrews, King Solomon, Moses, the French crusaders, Saladin and his warriors of the Holy War against the infidels, our quiet paces, dictated by the terrain and so strongly inspired by the history, must adapt to the contours of the land, sometimes steep and rough, sometimes smiling and pleasant...
From the true desert in the east to Wadi Araba and Israel in the west, our horizons are surrounded by history.
The Nature Reserve of Dana, where the ride begins, rich in fauna (recently rediscovered) and its flora, gives us a magnificent start towards the Crusader castle of Shaubak - or "The krak of Mount Royal" - and the tormented buttresses of the mountains of Beidha and of the "Siq Al Barid" ("Little Petra").
Within the ancient kingdom of Nabateans, an imaginative man is constantly struck by the enigmatic features of the pink sandstone... Petra, the forgotten city, the Arabian Petra of the Hellenists, holds out its arms to us. Just for Petra alone, the trip is more than worth any trouble!
But another wonder awaits our eager pace - this one provided by nature - Wadi Rum, and its modern legend of Lawrence of Arabia, the world of the true Bedouin, so rare nowadays...
